5Great machine, smooth, quiet, good aerobic workout for the long term
By Luv the imac
We bought this at a local store because they had a great rebate and let us take one home on the spot. I recommend trying several different brands and models to find which one you like. We tried the Nautilus 2000, several of the Life Fitness models and a Precor. The Precor elliptical was nice with the adjustable incline, but required more use of your ankles and knees because of it. I was looking for a good aerobic workout with smooth motions and found it with the Life Fitness. The Nautilus 2000 would have been fine, too, however their company stability is a bit shaky right now. Also their customer service has been rated poorly.Life Fitness is a solid company with a great product. My parents have had the X3 for 9 years and it's still going strong. Our new X3 has the advanced console, quite a step up from 9 years ago. It's super smooth, very quiet, easy on your joints and has a full range of options from manual to a variety of preprogrammed modes. The advantages of it over the X1 would be: covered pinch points in the back (only important if you have small children), bearings instead of bushings, making long term maintenance easier, and cushioned footpads on the X3. With the rebate the prices of the two got very close together so we went with the X3.I'm looking forward to a lot of years with this unit. We were advised that most ellipticals should last you between 8-12 years. With the free 5 yr warranty we got that should get us most of the way there. If you find a deal on amazon, great. If not, try negotiating with your local fitness store for either a price break, or free warranty, free mat, or all of the above. There is room to wiggle on price for many of them.We also got 24 month 0% financing. I advise that also as this unit isn't cheap.Overall, I think ALL ellipticals are way overpriced, but this one does feel like a solid machine. When considering where to put it in your house, don't forget about height. We were unable to put it in the basement with our other equipment because the ceiling is too low. Measure yourself standing on it at the highest point in the cycle to see if you have enough head room. This one has a 6 1/2 foot length, but we need over 7 1/2 feet for height.

4Solid, quiet, reliable machine w/ a variety of workouts, solid HR controls, but needs a few more challenging resistance levels
By Some Guy on Amazon
Overall this is a really nice, well-rounded, reliable machine.Disclaimer about my experience with the X3:I actually own the previous generation of the model being offered here by Amazon. However, the only major differences between the two are that the present model has an updated, more informative control panel, as well as heart rate monitors mounted on its handle grips. Everything else is basically the same as the unit I own, which is a good thing--the X3 is a very nice machine overall.Basics:The X3 is smooth, quiet, and stable (mostly owing to the X3's eddy current resistance system, which is very solid and very heavy). The X3 has a pretty good variety of programs:- Manual- Hill- Random- EZ Incline/Resistance- Sport Training- Time-Based Goal- Distance-Based Goal- Fat Burn- Cardio- Heart Rate Hill(tm)- Heart Rate Interval Extreme Heart Rate(tm)- Extreme Heart Rate(tm)- Goal Workouts- Custom- Quick Start- Race ModeAn X3 feature that I really like is its heart rate control system. It comes with built-in heart rate hand-grip monitors (they're on the little "handlebar" setup just below the control panel, not on the swing arm grips), as well as a wireless heart rate monitor system (complete w/ chest strap). The wireless system is pretty flexible to third-party equipment as well, so if you have a HR monitor that you like and prefer to use that, it should work with the X3. I actually misplaced my original Life Fitness heart rate monitor chest strap, so I had to buy a replacement Nike monitor, which has worked flawlessly with my X3.Using the heart rate monitor strap or the handle sensors, the programs can adjust resistance to keep your heart rate in the appropriate BPM target range for your age and your weight. I believe this is also supposed to figure into the calculation of the calories burned. A word of warning: the calories burned figure, as is the case with many of these home fitness machines seem awfully high. If tracking calories burned is important to you, you may have to adjust the official figure down to get a more accurate number. If you do use a separate heart rate monitor strap, it probably comes with a watch, which can often provide an alternate calculation of calories burned to cross-check against the X3's calculations.Pros:- Smooth- Quiet (after I moved my X3 to my new house, it started whirring a little bit more loudly, but I think that's because we went over a big pothole that may have jarred something a little bit to much in the resistance module)- Reliable (no significant problems, even after a partial dis-assembly and a pretty rough-and-tumble move to a new home)- Heart rate monitor controls via both the built-in hand grip monitors and the wireless heart rate monitor chest strap- Decent variety of programs, including ones where resistance changes based on your heart rate monitor readout in order to keep your heart rate in the proper BPM zone- Fairly long 20" stride length (if you're really tall, you might prefer a slightly longer stride or an adjustable stride machine- Display keeps track of most anything you need to know, such as time elapsed/remaining, RPM, distance, Calories burned, etc.Cons:- Fairly expensive (though all quality elliptical machines are pretty expensive)- No incline control (not unusual for home machines--with the possible exception of some units in the $4-6K range)- Very heavy (only a problem if you have to move it, though in that case, it can also be partially disassembled without too much trouble)- No adjustable stride length (again this is usually not available on home machines, and not really a problem except for the very, very tall user)- Highest-level resistances are just OK--they might not difficult enough for more fit younger users- "Calories Burned" figure seems very high, although this is true of most home fitness machines, and a lot of gym machines as well. Also, the way the X3 calculates calories burned figure does not seem to change at all with variations in heart rate, only with changes in resistance level and RPM. This is also probably pretty common.Unsolicited advice:- Make sure the room you plan to put any machine in allows for enough headroom--these machines raise you up more than you think, and if you plan on putting a machine like this in any sort of a lowered-ceiling room, you'll likely end up banging your head on the ceiling, or coming pretty close to it.- Actually try out machines with different features and/or read a variety of reviews. All good home fitness equipment is pretty expensive, and if you don't like something about a model, you may as well know it before you buy it. If you don't do your homework, you might not like the machine you buy. If you don't like it, you won't use it and then all you're left with is an expensive coat-rack.

5Excellent Machine
By Dante
We purchased our machine a few years back. It is easy to use, easy on the knees and hips and probably one of the best pieces of exercise equipment we have ever bought over the past 25 years we have been in our home. We still use it for exercise on a regular basis and not to hang our clothes on as with previous pieces of exercise equipment. We would highly recommend it for anyone looking to get off the couch and get some exercise without the expense and hassle of going to gym.
