4Solid Machine with initial problems but excellent customer service support.
By Trent Erney
I ordered AFG 18.1 AXT Ascent Trainer wanting a really sturdy home elliptical with incline capability. I researched consumer reports- this machine highly rated and rated excellent for sturdiness/build. Relatively new and hard to find user feedback. User feedback is really importantThis machine, manufactured by Johnson Industries, arrived with a few dings in shipping box and a cosmetic crack in on of the foot petals. Assembly tools are included. Parts are in numbered bags corresponding to each step off assembly- a good idea. The numbered tags had fallen of a few of the parts bags and rested a little delay sorting things out since the nuts/bolts in each bag were similar to the other bag. Base rail bracket caps (big plastic end caps) were not labeled- initially mistook for a washer as they appear much smaller in the manual drawing than they actually are.Assembly took 3-4 hours with one person (recommend two people for stabilizing heavier pieces). A second person is very helpful to apply counter-traction.Well on to the assembled machine itself! From the get go (even before I assembled it) there was a terribly loud scraping noise when the pedal crank turned. Opening up the center plastic casing that covers the flywheel and crank shaft I could see that the outer 1/4 inch of the flywheel and crank wheel rubbed against each other.Decided to try machine anyway. Got excellent work out and aside from subtle pedal issue machine very smooth. Not quite as smooth as commercial Precor but very acceptable. The iPod dock and small speakers work well .Dock fits iPods and iPhones but not i5 with new smaller connector.Charges iPhone fast with complete charge by 30 minutes.Heart rate monitor is not accurate, especially when iPod/Phone being used. This applies to both Polar chest strap included with unit and sensor handles. This is disappointing but a known issue with most treadmill and elliptical machines, even high end commercial units. The way this machine is designed your body very close to the front console. It OK for me (I'm 5'7")- not sure how it would impact tall person.Problem Summary:Flywheel-Crank scraping noise unbearable as this is supposed to be a whisper quite machine. There was a subtle intermittent wobble/click on the right foot pedal side.Attaching upper rails to incline lever very difficult to center. I could only get three of the four bolts through the holes.Cosmetic crack in one of plastic foot petals.Heart Rate monitor (both chest strap and machine handles) unreliable; especially with iPod playing while mounted on console.I was tempted to send back through Amazon after initial disappointment of excess noise and multiple small fitting issues. However, even if you keep box and styrofoam there is NO WAY you will be able to put everything back together as it arrived. Almost impossible physically and would take too much time/effort.I called Johnson Fitness customer service (contact info prominently displayed on green placard that came in parts box ). This included toll free contact phone info and their web address.Long story short- Johnson arranged for local contract service company, Fit-Med Services of Southern California to service machine. I was skeptical when their rep (Sophia) decided to order parts even before the Rep checked out the machine. My thought was the problem was a frame issue and the machine would need to be replaced. Sophia reassured me that everything would be taken care of as determined A center console was ordered due to the heart rate monitor issues.Fit-Med contacted me the day after I contacted Johnson to update me. I was told it would take about 1 week for them to receive the replacement part and that they would call to schedule a service appointment upon receipt of the parts. Exactly a week later i received a call to schedule home service appointment.Fit-Med Service Rep arrived this morning 5 minutes BEFORE scheduled time frame of 9AM to 11AM. Marc was cleanly dressed in company uniform, polite and immediately got to work. He adjusted flywheel, foot pedal lever arm and replaced foot pad within 20 minutes. He clearly explained what issues were (related to shifting during multiple shipping points). he then got the elusive 4th bolt in the upper rail/lever arm connection with my applying counter traction.Johnson shipped a new console (~$200) due to heart rate monitor issues. Marc was honest and told me that HR monitoring in all ellipticals and treadmills (particularly wireless) is always problematic and this would not likely fix motion/iPod interference issues. However, these units are often the first to fail and that having this as back up not a bad idea.Performance After AdjustmentsThis elliptical is whisper quite now and works like it should.Extremely happy with responsiveness of Johnson Fitness rep (Sophia) and their contracted repair company (Fit-Med). It is a pleasure to have a technician arrive on time and ready to go. I realize that So Cal market is large and mature for Fitness companies. Not sure how accessible a contract repair company would be in a rural area. This needs to be considered as these units very hard to repackage and return. Will see how it holds up.

5smooth and quiet
By Real LCR girl
This is an awesome elliptical. It makes no noise at all and has a really smooth glide. Very easy to program or use on manual. Nice ergonomics. Comes with a fair amount of assembly, but it turned out to be a relatively easy one-woman job. I would highly recommend it!
